Vexations by derek beaulieu

Pour se jouer 840 fois de suite ce motif, il sera bon de se préparer au préalable, et dans le plus grand silence, par des immobilités serieuse.

Erik Satie
(“In order to play the theme 840 times in succession, it would be advisable to prepare oneself beforehand, and in the deepest silence, by serious immobilities”)

This beautiful project by Canadian poet Derek Beaulieu shows a photocopy degeneration of French composer Erik Satie’s (1866-1926) piece VEXATIONS. In many ways this project can relate to my 2008 project Barcodes where constant degeneration of a barcode affected the dynamics and the volume of the barode being played by a film projector.

VEXATIONS decomposes the score of Erik Satie’s masterpiece through repeated photocopy degeneration. Each volume uses a different photocopier to degenerate Satie’s score, much like different pianists gather to play Satie’s score in marathon sessions.

Each of the 2 volumes are available online for purchase (limited edition of 26 copies at $26 each) or can be downloaded as free PDFs.
