Curated by Ray Hegelbach and Stéphanie Lagarde with the artists Nicolas Colon (USA), Cecilie Bjørgås Jordheim (NO), Mikko Kuorinki (FIN), Stéphanie Lagarde (FR) and Oliver Laric (AUT).
They clean, they order, they simplify.
These five artists are methodical.

October 2013 I was happily invited to London to do a screening of my 16mm film Barcodes.
My former super 8-teacher from 10 years back, Karel Doing, and Vicky Smith had curated a night of international film projects with the focus on tactile and a hands-on way of working the celluloid.

These five artists are methodical.

AAA CC DD EE G H IIII J KK LLL M NN OOOO RRRR U proposes a gathering of various types of repeated gestures: Hands replacing objects with words and words with objects, emptying signs of their significance, attributing new functions to language, manipulating semiotics to inject poetry into rational systems. In an energetic rhythm that seems unstoppable, the five artists are weaving in and out of paralanguages, transforming sounds into images into words into objects into places into concepts, making meaningful arrangements out of a succession of signs – or the opposite. Language is turned upside down, squeezed, dissolved, signs are highlighted or made obsolete, drawing out some of the infinite potential from poetical roads. It will spread its presence onto human gestures, geographical spaces, functional objects, flowers, landscapes, sounds.
We find poetry in unsuspected places, brought by unsuspected methods, driven by a human need to re-invent language. In a paradoxical process, the artists extract language from its habits and context to elect another rational and basic protocol with which to work: Alphabetical order, logical sequence, repetition, cut-and-paste, displace and replace, all types of systematic processes surprisingly drive words into poetry. An irresistible impulse to hijack language gathers these artists, seizing content, grammar and vocabulary for personal poetical/political matters to make into their own new partitions.
AAA CC DD EE G H IIII J KK LLL M NN OOOO RRRR U shows our tendancy to create disorder where there are invariably rules, and to use those rules where we find apparent chaos, choosing language as our first tool.
The exhibition reflects the lively exchange that Stéphanie Lagarde and Ray Hegelbach set up, over distance and between languages, which lead to the transformation of language into this colorful gathering of works. Spoken therapeutic massages, gesticulating arms, screamed landscapes, literary flower compositions are here to remind us that rearranging reality is, above all, a poetical emergency.

A thought must always be translated and processed before it finds its way out, and the thought's original and genuine meaning is always in the swaddle of interpretation and vulnerable to the distortion of meaning. Veiling of the original meaning starts there.

The project takes it place from the philosophy of dialogue by Martin Buber and a quote taken from a the blog post Hvordan vet vi at en oversettelse er god? (How do we know that a translation is good?)(www.forlagsliv.no/Cappelen Damm, 10.10.11) where editor Åsfrid Hegdal is quoting her friend Marianne Bruusgaard.
This quote in Bokmål is translated to 4 other languages in Norway; Nynorsk, Sami, Kvääni and Norwegian-Romani. The texts are used in the composition by isolating the notational letters (C, D,
E, F, G, A, and H) and bringing them in to the notational system to indicate pitch. The absence of the characters in between the chosen letters indicate the durations/note values.

This time the piece is made for a quintet of aerophones; flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and horn.
In all of Norway Bokmål and Nynorsk are equal languages. North Sami language is equal to the Norwegian languages in some regions in Finmark and Troms. Kvääni (Kvensk) was in 2005 acknowledged as a separate language in Norway. In addition to these languages, Norwegian-Romani is in a special position as the romani people came into the country in the 16th century. Their original language, romanés -with roots from India, has been developed over the years into an oral language called Norwegian-Romani still in use in Norway today.

Thursday's performance at the Annual State Exhibition/Høstutstillingen
Together with singer Stine Janvin Motland and double bass player Jo Fougner Skaansar, my composition, that is part of the project LOCAL COLOR: Ghosts Variations, was performed at the Annual State Exhibition/Høstutstillingen Thursday September 19th.

Today, the journalists had a sneak peak at the 126th Annual State Exhibiton (Høstutstillingen) that has it's official opening Saturday September 14th.
The immediate response from art critic Mona Pahle Bjerke from The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) was that it was "An unusual boring Annual State Exhibiton".
Well, judge for yourself, but at the same time I'd like to invite you all for my part of the show, a performance Thursday September 19th, 9pm at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo.
This is my debut at the Annual State Exhibition and together with Stine Janvin Motland (vocals) and Jo Fougner Skaansar (double bass) my composition First Of All There Is Blue (2011) is to be performed.

Screening at no.w.here lab
I'm honoured to announce that my 16 mm film Barcodes (2008) is to be screened at no.w.here lab in London October 16th. This is a place where I, as an analogue filmmaker, was dreaming of having a residency, working my way through new projects on 16 mm and getting to know London a bit better.
Finally I get to visit this place that I've heard so much about.
The event is programmed by Vicky Smith and Karel Doing.

"We refer to Living Film with respect to the reversibility of the terms: film as object that is activated through physical contact and film as an ongoing mode of material practice that shapes the consciousness of, animates and enlivens its makers.
This program of films, installations and performances focuses on the use of film as a living material. In mainstream cinema every trace of physical contact is removed from the film material, but with the disappearance of film from the industry, the medium is liberated from this armour.
Living Film presents a selection of works made through the practice of touching film, applying bodily fluids, and chemically and/or physically altering it's surface. These works take the form of single screen films, performative action, installation and expanded cinema.
At stake here is not just an artistic concept or method but the formation of a strategy towards an alternative filmmaking ecology: working with cheap or out of date film stocks; bartering knowledge for materials; finding cooperative forms for using resources and equipment.

Fishing for souls
The Polish Composer Witold Lutoslawski worked with controlled chance strategies for how a piece should be performed. He could compose a musical line for each instrument, transcribe them as loop and let them play until a signal was given. He tried to get away from music being written by the orchestra vertically, so he made the loops in different lengths. He made each instrument a separate sheet. When reading music you often read vertically. His wife actually solved this problem by cutting the note sheets in to pieces that they called mobiles.This makes me think about the mobiles/kinetic sculptures of Marcel Duchamp and of course László Moholy-Nagy. I love those constructivist movies.
Everything was strictly written down and the performance gave no surprises, so he didn't share Cage's philosophy and use of I-ching.
Haven't figured out how he worked with text (was he actively using the text to compose (like I do) i.e.?) but I do get inspired by the mobile-technique.
While listening to the radio as I always do, there was a Norwegian soprano, Solveig Kringlebotn, who performed a piece by Lutoslawski. He actually wrote it for her during his last years. It's quite funny and based on a French children's poem.
It's called La Sauterelle (The Grasshopper). Here's a link (La Sauterelle starts at approx. 2:45).
In Lutoslawski's notebook, Varga (1976): "[...] I have a strong desire to communicate something, through my music, to the people. I am not working to get many 'fans' for myself; I do not want to convince, I want to find. I would like to find people who in the depths of their souls feel the same way as I do. That can only be achieved through the greatest artistic sincerity in every detail of music, from the minutest technical aspects to the most secret depths. I know that this standpoint deprives me of many potential listeners, but those who remain mean an immeasurable treasure for me. [...] I regard creative activity as a kind of soul-fishing, and the 'catch' is the best medicine for loneliness, that most human of sufferings."
So Lutosławski described musical composition as a search for listeners who think and feel the same way he did —fishing for souls.
I like that.
The studio
Since this is where I spend most of my time I want to share some pics of my studio.
I love the big window and most of all the backyard view trough the old windows and the huge horse-chestnut tree. This is a pic from this winter.
I'm "suffering" from many years working with analogue film. My packed shelves speaks for itself, but new film projects might just pop up so I'll keep all the stuff for now. I have a fully functional developing kit for film + film stock + projectors + cameras laying around and by only having a 5 m² studio I'm kind of proud that placing everything worked out so smoothly.
But saying so, if there's some handy people out there that'd like to help me build a loft for storage above my "kitchen nook", I'll be forever greatful.
